Y Officials Seeking Dual USA Certification

YMCA Level I officials seeking dual USA Stroke and Turn certification

NEW USA Officials: Registration with USA Swimming

  • Request an OMR link from your team's coach.  Clicking on this link will walk you through the process of registering as a member of USA Swimming (separate from your child's membership).  When you are asked for your role, select "Official."  USA Swimming membership currently costs $100.
  • Complete the following registration elements:
    • Athlete Protection Training (annual requirement)
    • Background Check (biannual requirement)
    • Concussion protocol training (one-time requirement)
  • Links to all these requirements, as well as the required Foundations of Officiating clinic, are located here: https://university.usaswimming.org/landing.  Click the "Officials" button at the top.

Education and training

  • YMCA Level I Clinic
  • Pass Y Level I test
  • USA Swimming Foundations of Officiating online clinic and assessment (one-time requirement)
  • Complete 4 on-deck apprentice sessions shadowing an experienced USA ST Judge over at least 2 USA-sanctioned or approved meets.  
    • ​Apprentice sessions must be documented using the paper or online NJS stroke and turn apprentice evaluation form.
    • When you complete your apprentice sessions, email [email protected] so you can be fully certified.  If you have paper evaluations, take a photo and include these in your email.

Recertification

  • Register with USA Swimming annually and maintain current APT and BGC
  • Work at least 8 sessions at USA-sanctioned or USA-approved Y meets over 3 years
  • Complete a Y Level I clinic and test every 3 years

  • NOTE: Y Level II officials seeking initial certification as a USA chief judge, starter, or referee must complete the USA training clinic,assessment, and apprentice requirements.  

Recertification

  • Register with USA Swimming annually and maintain current APT and BGC
    • For USA-S stroke and turn judges, work at least 8 sessions at USA-sanctioned or USA-approved Y meets over 3 years
    • For USA-S CJs, work 16 sessions at USA-sanctioned or USA-approved Y meets over 3 years with at least 8 of these as a CJ
    • For USA-S starters, work 8 sessions as a starter at USA-sanctioned or USA-approved Y meets over 3 years 
    • For USA-S referees, work 16 sessions at USA-sanctioned or USA-approved Y meets over 3 years with at least 8 of these in any Referee position
  • Complete a Y Level II clinic and test every 3 years.
