New Jersey through fair and inclusive opportunities.

How to Become a New Jersey Swimming Official

Becoming a New Jersey Swimming official requires the completion of two processes: becoming a registered official member of USA Swimming, and completing a training and certification program.

USA Swimming Registration (four parts)

  1. Registering as a member of USA Swimming (annual requirement) See instructions HERE.
  2. Completing a background check (every other year)
  3. Completing Athlete Protection Training (annual requirement)
  4. Completing a Concussion Protocol Training (one-time requirement)

NOTE: Your USA Swimming parent profile is NOT the same as a USA Swimming membership. To register as a member of USA Swimming with the role of Official, you must first request the OMR link from your team's coach.  This link will walk you through the process of creating your own USA Swimming membership.  When you are asked to select your role, you should select "Official."

USA Swimming Training and Certification

To officiate at a meet, you need to complete a training and certification program.  You will first complete an online training clinic and test. You will also complete an apprenticeship process in which you shadow an experienced official on deck for at least four sessions spread across two different meets.  You can view the USA Swimming Certification Standards HERE

You can view specific eligibility, training, certification, and recertification information for each officiating position using the links below.
